چکیده

Speakers with velopharyngeal incompetence produce hypernasal speech across voiced elements. Acoustical study [1] on hypernasal speech and nasalized vowels of normal speakers revealed the fact that there is an additional formant frequency introduced in the low-frequency region, close to the first formant of the phonations /a/, /i/, and /u/. Based on this observation, in the current study, the focus is given to the low-frequency region alone, by low-pass filtering the speech signal. From each frame of the given speech signal, a three dimensional feature vector, which comprises of the locations of first two highest frequency peaks in the group delay spectrum and the ratio of the group delay of these frequencies, is extracted. An Accumulated Minimum distance classifier and a Maximum likelihood classifier are trained for each of the phonations separately, and tested to make a decision between normal and hypernasal speakers. For the current study, phonations /a/, /i/, and /u/ uttered by 45 speakers with cleft palate who are expected to produce hypernasal speech, and phonations of 26 normal speakers are considered. Results show that the presence of hypernasality in speech can be detected with 85% of accuracy using the statistical classifiers which use the proposed three dimensional feature vector.

Automatic Selection of Acoustic and Non-Linear Dynamic Features in Voice Signals for Hypernasality Detection

Automatic detection of hypernasality in voices of children with Cleft Lip and Palate (CLP) is made considering two charcaterization techniques, one based on acoustic, noise and cepstral analysis and other based on nonlinear dynamic features. Besides characterization, two automatic feature selection techniques are implemented in order to find optimal sub-spaces to better discriminate between hea...

Recent advances in hypernasal speech detection using the nonlinear teager energy operator

Speakers with a defective velopharyngeal mechanism produce speech with inappropriate nasal resonance. It is of clinical interest to detect hypernasality as it is indicative of an anatomical, neurological, or peripheral nervous system problem. While clinical techniques exist for detecting hypernasality, a preferred approach would be noninvasive to maximize patient comfort and naturalness of spea...

Variability of Acoustic Features of Hypernasality and it’s Assessment

Hypernasality (HP) is observed across voiced phonemes uttered by Cleft-Palate (CP) speakers with defective velopharyngeal (VP) opening. HP assessment using signal processing technique is challenging due to the variability of acoustic features across various conditions such as speakers, speaking style, speaking rate, severity of HP etc. Most of the study for hypernasality (HP) assessment is base...

Influence of speech sample on perceptual rating of hypernasality.

PURPOSE To investigate the influence of speech sample of spontaneous conversation or sentences repetition on intra and inter-rater hypernasality reliability. METHODS One hundred and twenty audio recorded speech samples (60 containing spontaneous conversation and 60 containing repeated sentences) of individuals with repaired cleft palate±lip, both genders, aged between 6 and 52 years old (mean...

The influence of listener training on the perceptual assessment of hypernasality.

Introduction A high agreement in the perceptual assessment of hypernasality among different listeners is difficult to achieve. Prior listener training and the standardization of analysis criteria may be effective strategies to decrease the effect of perceptual assessment subjectivity and increase the agreement among listeners. Objective To investigate the influence of prior training on agreemen...
